El viaje a Barcelona / The Barcelona trip
It was an autumn day in Barcelona. My friend Clara and I had planned to spend the morning at the Barceloneta beach. We wanted to enjoy the sun and, if the weather allowed, take a quick dip in the Mediterranean. But when we arrived, we realized that summer was long gone. The cool wind blew from the sea, and although the sun was shining faintly, it wasn’t enough to warm the air. The waves crashed against the shore more strongly than usual, and there were hardly any people on the sand.
“The sea doesn’t seem to be inviting us to swim today,” Clara said, rubbing her arms to warm up.
“You’re right,” I replied, looking at the cold water. “It’s not the best day for the beach.”
I turned and saw a bike rental shop near the promenade. The bikes were lined up, gleaming under the morning sun.
“How about we rent some bikes and explore the city?” I suggested.
Clara smiled. She knew it was a great opportunity to enjoy Barcelona in a different way. We rented two bikes and began pedaling along the promenade, the cool breeze on our faces. We passed by the restaurants with their empty terraces, the Port Vell with its yachts shining under the sun, and continued toward the Ciutadella Park.
The park was full of trees already starting to change into autumn colors. Yellow and red leaves fell to the ground as we passed by the lake and the famous Cascada Monumental. We decided to stop for a moment to soak in the atmosphere and watch families strolling and kids playing near the giant stone mammoth.
“It’s a shame it’s so cold,” Clara said. “But I have to admit, it still feels special.”
After a while, we continued our ride. We pedaled toward the Arc de Triomf, where the tree-lined avenue stretched out before us, full of life and tourists taking pictures. From there, we decided to head to the Eixample neighborhood to get a close look at the majestic Sagrada Familia. When we arrived, we stayed for a while, admiring the towers rising toward the gray sky, wrapped in scaffolding as always, but still impressive.
“No matter how many times I see it, it always amazes me,” Clara said as we parked the bikes to take a few photos.
Just as we were about to move on, the sky started to darken. At first, it was a few soft drops, but soon the rain began to fall hard. We looked at each other, soaked, and started laughing.
—¡Esto no estaba en el plan! —dije, intentando cubrirme con mi chaqueta.
“This wasn’t part of the plan!” I said, trying to cover myself with my jacket.
—¡Rápido, busquemos un sitio donde refugiarnos! —gritó Clara entre risas.
“Quick, let’s find a place to take cover!” Clara shouted through her laughter.
Luckily, just a few meters away, we found a small restaurant on a corner, cozy and with warm lights. We left the bikes under an awning and quickly went inside. The place smelled of freshly made food, and the atmosphere was warm and lively, full of people seeking refuge from the rain.
We sat by a window, where we could watch the rain pour down outside. Clara looked at me, smiling conspiratorially.
—¿Sabes qué sería perfecto ahora? —me dijo.
“You know what would be perfect right now?” she asked.
—¿Patatas bravas? —adiviné.
“Patatas bravas?” I guessed.
—Exacto —dijo, riendo—.
“Exactly,” she said, laughing. “There’s no better way to chase away the cold.”
We ordered a big plate of patatas bravas and a beer each. When the waiter brought the dish, covered with spicy sauce and creamy alioli, we couldn’t help but smile. We dug in, enjoying the contrast between the warmth of the food and the cold we had left outside.
As we watched the rain soak the streets of Barcelona, we chatted about our day. Although we hadn’t swum at the beach as we’d planned, we had toured the city, passing by Barceloneta, the Ciutadella Park, the Arc de Triomf, and the Sagrada Familia. And now we were in a cozy corner, enjoying one of the city’s most typical dishes.
“Sometimes the best days are the ones that don’t go as planned,” I said, taking a sip of my beer.
Clara asintió, sonriendo.
Clara nodded, smiling.
—Definitivamente.
“Definitely.”
